The days are finally getting longer, and the weather is starting to warm up. If you haven’t already retrieved your caravan from your Perth storage facility, now is the time to fetch it. Before you attach it to the back of your car, you need to prepare your caravan for a summer of adventure.
Read on to learn our top tips for preparing your caravan for summer.
Get your caravan serviced
A full service will check the chassis, the electrics, wheels, tyres, brakes, and towbar, along with the stabilisers, to make sure it is safe and efficient for travelling.
Reconnect your caravan’s leisure battery
If you followed our tips about storing your caravan over winter, you kept your battery safely over the last few months. After applying a smear of grease to the terminals to prevent them from furring up, reconnect it to the caravan. Check the voltage with the onboard meter to make sure it is reading around 12.8V. If not, it might need replacing.
Flush and sterilise your water system
Even though you likely drained the system at the start of winter, we recommend a flush and sterilization to eliminate any unwanted bacterial growth. It’s also worth giving the grey water tank a quick flush with some sterilising solution to avoid any unpleasant smells.
Check/refill gas bottles
Again, if you followed our advice, you stored your gas bottles along with your caravan in a Perth long-term storage facility over winter. Get them out and how full they are, and refill if needed.
Check the toilet operation
Like the freshwater system, the toilet needs a once-over to ensure it’s working well – do it before you leave for a trip as you don’t want to be caught out!
Test the air conditioning
Nothing is worse than being stuck in a remote campsite with no air conditioning on a 40-degree day. Start the unit up and run it for a while to make sure it is functioning correctly.
Give your caravan a spring clean
Use a low-pressure, high-flow hose rather than a pressure cleaner to rinse off any debris on the outside. Open all the doors and windows, roof vents, and cupboard doors, give everything the chance to air out and give every surface a good wipe down.
Restock the shelves and make the beds
Load up with essentials like rice, pasta, and cereal, shake out all the bedding and make the beds.
Now your caravan is ready to hit the road. Where will you go first?
